Landscapes at 80mph
Six small gouache/opaque-watercolour sketches from a train heading South along the England/Wales border; each about the size of a credit card. The view was changing all the time but the sky was (relatively) consistent minute by minute, so this was … Continue reading

Cloudy
Six attempts at describing morning and evening clouds flowing over the Pyrenees, and one in the middle of just the mountains, trying different approaches (opaque white ink, reserved white paper, titanium white watercolour). I think the third and the last are starting … Continue reading
Cloudy, with a chance of sketching
A collection of cloud studies (more here). The third one is the same cloud drawn three times as sunset arrived (I ‘overcooked’ this sketch and should have stopped much sooner. They’ve ended up looking like Aegean islands…). And the last two are … Continue reading

Cloudy
The same cloud sketched four times, continually changing as sunset approached (‘cloud’ is sometimes more verb than noun). The light pencil lines were mostly drawn blind, with watercolour wash added straight after the final drawing, the colours still fading from the sky. The … Continue reading
Hedgy
Three stages of a monochrome hedge sketch (sounds stunningly dull, but bear with me…). First the initial pencil line drawing; then adding grey ink (which blends really well with soft pencil) for the leaf shadows, and white gel-pen for the foliage outline; and … Continue reading

Wiry views
Drawn at dusk, sat on the bottom steps of The Shrubbery (previously), looking down Harley Street in Bath. My eye was caught by the telephone wires and chimneys silhouetted against the winter sky. I was sorry that I didn’t get … Continue reading

Stantonbury
Lexington grey broad fountain pen and water-brush, water-colour, A6 – 20 minutes A quick sketch of a familiar view, looking South West towards Stantonbury Hill about 4 miles away. It was a balmy early summer evening, the trees all in leaf, … Continue reading

Stormy weather
Storms are battering the coast and flood warnings are in place across the UK after a very wet and windy Christmas. This was the sky above Bath at dusk yesterday, some of the clouds shedding rain as they pass. Lexington … Continue reading

Travel thumbnails #3, planes
More travel thumbnails in gouache, this time the view from an airplane flying Istanbul to London. The window shapes and wing-tips are a bit wonky… All in Black Pigma 1mm pen, water-brush with Lexington grey ink, gouache, A5 Taxiing down the … Continue reading
