Father’s Day
My father painted last year by me. I went straight in with water-colour for a change, and the facial features are pleasingly soft/blurred as they were done ‘wet on wet’. Watercolour, A4 Below is a drawing of me by my daughter. … Continue reading

Park life
A warm and sunny Saturday in the park, people reading, chatting and sunbathing, covering the lawn in front of the Royal Crescent. A great chance to do lots of fast and simple figure studies of people at rest. Fountain pen and water-brushes with … Continue reading

Public transport
Travelling on public transport usually involves some waiting, and opportunities for a quick sketch of people at rest. It’s when a small portable sketch kit is most useful, and provides excellent practise for capturing a likeness. Here’s a selection from the … Continue reading

Looser lines
An early Spring Saturday with Jim in Bath Abbey Courtyard, where we tried to sketch with minimal looking down at the paper, ‘blind contour drawing’. We didn’t manage the recommended “90% looking at subject, 10% checking the picture’s progress” proportions, but … Continue reading

Mum and Dad

My left hand yet again. The sketch is tiny, cartoon-like. (Pigma pen, watercolour, A6) Some of this reliable model’s previous appearances on the blog…

Crow’s feet
Another late evening sketch, using a mirror to sketch my left eye. I held a gleeful grin for several minutes, strongly top-lit by a daylight bulb, to capture my periorbital lines, or ‘crows feet’ in full detail; it felt like contour mapping part … Continue reading

Cafe sketching
Helen from St Helens in Society Cafe, Bath. She got in touch through this blog as she was interested in urban sketching and having a look at the materials I use. She’s posted about her initial sketches, and it’ll be … Continue reading
Jim and Anna, again
Jim feeding Anna, and me up a ladder again. (See previous post Lunch). The focussed stillness when feeding a baby helps to make a great sketch subject Marker pen with carbon ink, watercolour, A4
