Blogroll
- Antonia Santolaya/Enrique Flores A chance to browse through 26 travel sketchbooks. Lots of fresh watercolour, ink and pencil location pictures.
- Buttnekkiddoodles Don Colley’s blog, sharing fabulous brush-pen drawings of people and much else. He’s a big fan of Pitt Artist brush pens.
- Danny Gregory His book ‘The Creative License’ got me sketching, and his other books have helped to keep me going. He has a wonderfully loose style, using dip-pens, saturated colour inks etc.
- Handprint Exceptionally comprehensive information on watercolour paints and equipment. Exhaustive details on pigments, translucency, comparing brands etc. Essential viewing for the true obsessive.
- James Gurney A mine of information on ‘plein air’ painting and sketching from the author of ‘Dinotopia’. Daily posts, always interesting.
- Nina Johansson Stockholm based urban sketching, with lovely clarity and glowing colours. Lots of useful information on sketching kit that helped to get me started.

Urban sheep
A flock of sheep on the steep field in front of Lansdown Crescent on the Northern slopes of Bath. An odd but lovely urban sight, a very faint echo of the times when drover’s roads criss-crossed the UK, bringing flocks of sheep into many city-centre markets. … Continue reading

Glasses and bottles
Six attempts to sketch translucency using a range of line thicknesses; from ‘barely there’ (the pencil on the green San Pelegrino), to ‘bold’ (1mm Pigma pen on the chair with pint glass). They’re all late evening sketches of whatever’s in front of me, to keep up … Continue reading

Seated
A seated figure sketched while waiting for a couple of minutes at the Sports Village at Bath University; I used the rest of the page to test inks on top of paint. One corner of the testing was oddly beautiful, the … Continue reading
One bad apple
Another go at mostly painting, just using pencil lines for the overall shape and some pens for the lettering on the sticker. I usually add water-colour at the end of a sketch, after establishing line and shade with ink. Here it … Continue reading
From a moving vehicle
A collection of fast drive-by sketches; trees seen from a train, and vehicles from a car. The trees were glimpsed for a few seconds as we shot past, so a brush-pen was ideal for quickly capturing their individual shapes and key lines, with … Continue reading

Steam Fair
The wonderful Carters Steam Fair was in Bath over the summer, with steam-powered bumper cars, dodgems, dive bombers, chair-o-planes, giant octopus and much more. I sketched some of the logos on the vintage slot machines in the penny arcade (just doing the lines on … Continue reading

Take off, in-flight, landing
Scenes from a flight to Stockholm… A sketchy impression of the rolling patchwork landscape around Bristol airport as the plane took off, random images from a flight safety card (including a wildly optimistic ‘landing on water’), and planes waiting at Stockholm’s Arlanda airport under low … Continue reading

Stockholm sketching
Lexington grey in fountain pen and water-brush, watercolour, A5 – one hour We spent last week in Stockholm, and I was delighted to have the chance to go on a sketchcrawl, kindly arranged by Nina Johansson. Here are Tina (on the fence) and Nina … Continue reading

Birds flying, pigs not
Swifts and seagulls flying over our house at dusk. I wanted to work out the seagulls’ odd wing angles (forward and up, and back and down?) as they’re ubiquitous in Bath at the moment, and very hard to get right; so I did … Continue reading
