The Shrubbery
Looking down The Shrubbery, a steep path near our home in Bath. You have to squint a bit for it to work, and that’s a conservatory half-way up the house on the left, built on a balcony. (I blended dilute Winsor … Continue reading

The bill, please
The remains of another delicious meal at Yen Sushi in Bath. I’m learning how to get an even colour wash by using the water-brush to wet the area first; it’s tricky as you can’t see where you’ve already painted the water… Blue … Continue reading

“I scream, you scream…”
An ice-cream van next to the Royal Crescent, a tourist hot-spot in Bath. The owners packed up and left before I could draw them leaning out of the window serving customers, reminding me to sketch the people in a scene … Continue reading

Brock Street
Late afternoon, looking down Brock Street while sat under one of the huge plane trees in the centre of the King’s Circus, Bath. There’s a red sight-seeing bus heading towards towards the Royal Crescent, and a delivery van parked up … Continue reading

‘Fail better’ #2
Another repeated subject, with 4 versions of a familiar view where I regularly have to wait. The cars change, a notice is tied onto the lamp-post, a badly drawn traffic cone appears, and a bird flies over. But the basic … Continue reading

Park life
A warm and sunny Saturday in the park, people reading, chatting and sunbathing, covering the lawn in front of the Royal Crescent. A great chance to do lots of fast and simple figure studies of people at rest. Fountain pen and water-brushes with … Continue reading

Bog Island
Bath Abbey appearing over the rooftops on a bright and breezy day, sketched while leaning on a lamp-post (sincere apologies). I was on Bog Island, named after the public toilets, or ‘bogs’, which used to be there and that were converted … Continue reading

Public transport
Travelling on public transport usually involves some waiting, and opportunities for a quick sketch of people at rest. It’s when a small portable sketch kit is most useful, and provides excellent practise for capturing a likeness. Here’s a selection from the … Continue reading

Looser lines
An early Spring Saturday with Jim in Bath Abbey Courtyard, where we tried to sketch with minimal looking down at the paper, ‘blind contour drawing’. We didn’t manage the recommended “90% looking at subject, 10% checking the picture’s progress” proportions, but … Continue reading
