Blogroll
- Antonia Santolaya/Enrique Flores A chance to browse through 26 travel sketchbooks. Lots of fresh watercolour, ink and pencil location pictures.
- Buttnekkiddoodles Don Colley’s blog, sharing fabulous brush-pen drawings of people and much else. He’s a big fan of Pitt Artist brush pens.
- Danny Gregory His book ‘The Creative License’ got me sketching, and his other books have helped to keep me going. He has a wonderfully loose style, using dip-pens, saturated colour inks etc.
- Handprint Exceptionally comprehensive information on watercolour paints and equipment. Exhaustive details on pigments, translucency, comparing brands etc. Essential viewing for the true obsessive.
- James Gurney A mine of information on ‘plein air’ painting and sketching from the author of ‘Dinotopia’. Daily posts, always interesting.
- Nina Johansson Stockholm based urban sketching, with lovely clarity and glowing colours. Lots of useful information on sketching kit that helped to get me started.
- Russel Stutler Lots of very useful information on brush pens, palettes, sketching techniques. Based in Japan.
- Steven Reddy Great use of pen drawing and grey ink washes, sometimes combined with clear colour on top.
- The Sketching Forum Informal sharing of ideas, techniques, pictures and general chat about sketching. Set up by Russ Stutler.
- Urban Sketchers A constant parade of individual responses to the challenge of urban sketching. Always good for some inspiration, a new approach to try…

Panoramic
An oddly tidy living room with a detailed panoramic engraving of Bath by Trevor Haddrell (it’s hung straight in the real room. And the table top is level. And the chairs are the same height. Harrumph). I’m following Steven Reddy’s approach again (watch the linked … Continue reading

Beady
“Necklace with beads of glass, rock crystal, silver and amber. Late Viking age. Woman’s costume from Gotland.” The beads came from many countries, evidence of the Vikings’ extensive trading network. Sketched at the very lovely Stockholm National Historical Museum (could … Continue reading

Blossom
A sprig of blackthorn blossom sketched last year. Blackthorn has vicious thorns, but produces sloes for ginning. Spring is just around the corner… Fountain pen with carbon ink, watercolour, A6

Dead toad
I found this toad belly up in the garden last Summer, and returned to sketch it several times it over a few weeks. The colours changed, the body grew, then shrank, and the arms moved. Looks like he/she’s playing air … Continue reading
Two storey pool
A beautiful fountain/pool I saw in Istanbul last Summer. It was in an old bath-house, now a market, and connected the ground floor and basement. When the stall-holders saw me sketching they kindly put the water-pump on full, then they … Continue reading
Jim and Anna, again
Jim feeding Anna, and me up a ladder again. (See previous post Lunch). The focussed stillness when feeding a baby helps to make a great sketch subject Marker pen with carbon ink, watercolour, A4

iPad sketches
Two sketches, two weeks apart, of Sherry on her iPad. My current sketchbook has coloured paper every few pages making a white marker pen very useful. I’ve tried to sketch on an iPad but the time delay in mark-making and … Continue reading

Four candles
The ubiquitous café sketch. Black tea and lemon drizzle cake in Bath Guildhall market. I used a white marker pen to correct the fork handle and to lighten the lip of the mug, which could be considered cheating, and a bit … Continue reading
