Many hands

Drawing hands continues to be a challenge so here are some recent attempts. The first set was while watching TV, pausing the program and drawing any hands in the shot as fast as possible. The second is a range of hands from the first few pages of Tintin in Tibet; Herge’s hands are brilliantly clear and simple and very hard to reproduce… Finally my left hand drawn from life.

Excellent sketches of a difficult subject. I once sketched my own hand 100 times in an effort to improve, but alas. It’s still difficult.

Thanks Tina, how long did 100 sketches take? One per minute for over 1 1/2 hours?! I think the familiarity of our own hands sometimes makes it trickier? A similar problem when sketching familiar faces…
And after reading your latest post I’ll be adding ‘time taken to sketch’ to my posts from now on. Ed

Most of the hand sketches took only 5 or 10 minutes each. I did a few a day — a good way for an urban sketcher like me to work through the rainy winter months!
